Michel Gondry, Reluctant Cannes Judge

CANNES, France — By his own admission, Michel Gondry is not really cut out to be a judge. “I’m against competition,” Mr. Gondry, the French-born director of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “The Green Hornet,” explained recently. This may present a challenge to his role as the president of the short film jury at the Cannes Film Festival here, where he is tasked with, you know, picking a winner. Even when it comes to film, Mr. Gondry doesn’t think of himself as a particularly critical person. “Not in my territory, because I feel very under-confident,” he said, in an interview on the terrace of the Majestic Hotel on Wednesday. “I feel heavily criticized. I don’t feel I have the shoulder or the legitimacy of being critical for other people’s work.”.....
